Mobile Technology for Thailand is set to drive mobile app development ecosystem

With attempt to build up the ecosystem of mobile application development inThailand and to bring Thailand’s mobile application software industry onto the world’s software map, the nine organizations including government, private, and education sectors have officially joined hand to form the groups called ‘’ (MT2 pronounced as MT Square).

The nine organizations as the founding members are Telecommunications Research and Industrial Development Institute (TRIDI), Software Park Thailand, National Electronic and Computer Technology Center (Nectec), Kasetsat University, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Microsoft (Thailand), Intel Microelectronics (Thailand), Samart Corporation, and Spring Telecom.

MT2 will play role as the center for all stakeholders in mobile application development ecosystem in Thailand with the pool resource and contributions from the first nine founder members. The group will provide since technology know-how, development facility, training, and assistant to commercial software.

The group aims to increase mobile application developers in Thailand to meet the critical mass at around 30,000-40,000 people in the next 4 years.

According to TRIDI director Supot Tiarawut, the total mobile application market value in Thailand this year is expected to reach around Bt9.8 billion increased from Bt6.3 billion last year.

He added MT2 will develop Thai mobile application developers database, to provider them the facility such as technology tools, training & workshop, mobile application testing center service, business matching, and market place as well as helping on commercial in both local and global market.

“This collaboration is to lead the country’s mobile application development with the direction and plan as we will provide the trend of new technologies to guide them to develop applications which are demanded,” said Supot.

He added that TRIDI supports Bt5 million as the start-up budget for the establiment of mobile application testing center located at Software Park Thailand. Here, latest mobile phone devices and technologies will be available for developer’s testing. The center is expected to be official lunched next month.

Thanachart Numnonda director of Software Park Thailand said that mobile application software is the very huge market and big opportunity for Thai developers as its market is beyond domestic market. But it means the global market opportunity which is expected be around US$7 billion.

“Now, we do not have the information how many mobile application developers in Thailand therefore we hope this collaboration will be the good staring point to develop developer database and pool them with the government, private, and education supports and resources,” said Thanachart.

He added that mobile application software is the huge market for Thai developers should do not miss. Mobile devices do not mean only mobile phone but it also mean tablets and the future mobile devices in new form factors, and it does not mean only Hai market but it also mean the worldwide market.

The group aims to recruit both corporate and individual (software developers) members to join the group.

Meanwhile, private sectors both Intel Microelectronics (Thailand) and Microsoft (Thailand) also provide technologies and training for Thai developers. They also help developers to bring their application onto the market place for worldwide commercial.

Intel Microelectronics (Thailand)’s Strategist-Emerging Market Enabling Software Solution Group Jirawat Maeprasert said that Intel will offer Thai developers to develop application to serve Windows and MeeGo platforms and bring the application to be sold on Intel’s application store via appUp.com.

“Currently, there are 500 Thai developers join Intel AppUp Developer Program and there are 10 Thai-developed applications are available on Intel appUp.com. He added that joining MT2 will help Intel to increase more number of Thai developers to 1,000 people to join Intel mobile application developer community and aims to increase Thai-app to be 50 applications,” said Jirawat.
